A 70-year-old Dayton ISD bus driver has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that left a 14-year-old boy critically injured Friday morning, according to Dayton police.
Ricky Eugene Cherry, a Dayton resident, was arrested following an investigation into the crash that happened between 6:15 and 6:30 a.m. Oct. 16 near U.S. Highway 90 eastbound and Stilson Road.
Police said the boy was struck by a vehicle whose driver left the scene without stopping to render aid.
The victim, identified by his family as Brantley, is being treated at Texas Children’s Hospital, where he is fighting for his life.
Brantley’s aunt contacted Grizzy’s Hood News to share information about her nephew, describing him as a bright, smart young boy. She said the family is devastated by what happened.
Police have not released the specific charges against Cherry or confirmed whether he was driving a school bus at the time of the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
