IRS Announces 2027 Tax Changes

The Internal Revenue Service released its annual inflation adjustments for the 2027 tax year on Thursday, increasing several tax deductions and income thresholds that could affect how much Americans pay in federal income taxes.

According to the IRS, the changes cover nearly 70 tax provisions and include an increase in the Child Tax Credit. Most of the adjustments will apply to tax returns filed in 2028.

As inflation continues to drive up prices across the country, increasing numbers of Americans are finding it difficult to make ends meet on a day-to-day basis. While there are a number of tax deductions and credits available to help offset some of the costs that individuals and families face, taxpayers are finding that these provisions are not as effective as they once were.

“Hardworking American Taxpayers will continue to benefit from the Working Families Tax Cuts (WFTC) and will see the WFTC credits and deductions increase with this adjustment,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano.

In addition to adjusting both deductions and credits, the IRS also increased the income limits for the federal tax brackets, though tax rates themselves will remain the same. These thresholds determine how much income is taxed at each rate. The adjustments are intended to help prevent taxpayers from being pushed into higher tax brackets just because their wages have increased to keep up with the rising cost of living.

Families will also see changes to the Child Tax Credit. The maximum credit will increase from $2,200 to $2,300 per qualifying child. The maximum refundable portion also rose to $1,800.

Businesses will receive higher limits on certain deductions as well, including the amount they can immediately spend for equipment or property purchases — which is commonly referred to as the Section 179 deduction. The limit will increase from $2.56 million to $2.64 million for the 2027 tax year.

The Working Families Tax Cuts became law on July 4, 2025, and were intended to provide relief for working individuals and families. The 2027 adjustments will increase the value of certain tax benefits under the law in an effort to mitigate rising costs.
