LELAND, N.C. (WECT) – Leland has been awarded $973,600 to help pay for engineering and construction of a multi-use path along South Navassa Road.

The planned 10-foot-wide path will extend around 0.29 miles to Loop Road. It aims to improve connections and provide safer, more accessible travel options for pedestrians and cyclists.

According to the town, the path will connect to an existing multiuse path and provide a direct route between nearby residential developments, Village Road, Leland’s Gateway District, Sturgeon Creek and future recreational amenities.

The town said the project was identified as a high-priority multi-use path in its Integrated Mobility Plan and also aligns with the Gullah Geechee Heritage Trail Feasibility Study and the WMPO 2050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan.

The funds were provided through the Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Fiscal Year 2029-2030 Locally Administered Projects Program. Leland is one of four member jurisdictions that were awarded.
