Payroll processing issue leaves Novant Health employees waiting for pay

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A technical issue delayed pay deposits for thousands of Novant Health employees on Nov. 6, according to emails shared with WECT.

WECT received calls, emails and messages about the delays from frustrated employees and reached out to Novant Health for more information.

A viewer shared images of an email with WECT that appeared to be from Laurie Whalin, president of Novant Health’s Coastal Region. In the email, employees were told that payroll had been processed and that they would be paid on payday. The email states deposit timing could vary by bank.

“I apologize for any anxiety this may have caused and will be monitoring this throughout the day to ensure there are no further issues,” Whalin stated in the email.

A Novant Health spokesperson said in a statement that the issue arose after the organization switched to a new payroll distribution vendor in October.

“Following that transition, we identified a technology issue that impacted the arrival time of deposits into each financial institution’s account,” the spokesperson stated. “We are taking immediate steps to support affected team members, including reimbursing overdraft, late or returned-payment fees resulting from the delay.”

In an update at 2 p.m. Nov. 6, Novant Health leadership stated they have received confirmation some team members are beginning to see pay deposited into their bank accounts.

“Deposits will continue to be reflected as financial institutions process the funds today,” the organization stated. “We apologize again for the disruption and concern this delay has caused.”
